Carolyn and the Pacifiers

Right now we are attempting "sleep training," trying a phase of strict naptime/feeding/bedtime routine with a "progressive waiting" approach in the night when Carolyn cries. The idea is to encourage Carolyn to learn to comfort herself and soothe herself back to sleep. Don't ask me today how it's going... last night was not a good example of "progress" as she was still up about 5 times in the night and I hate, Hate, HATE listening to her cry, even though I do feel it is best for her for a short period of time so that she can learn a greater lesson. Today I don't feel like we've made any progress... but really, objectively, we have, though last night was not a good one.

One thing she has learned in the past week is how to manipulate the pacifier to her own mouth. Therefore we surround her with about six or eight pacis all conveniently near where her hands rest so that it is easy for her to grab one and stuff it in when the first one falls out. At least, that's the idea. However, Carolyn seems to think that if one paci is good, two or three would be even better. So she tries to stuff more than one into her mouth at a time, typically resulting in the loss of all of them. Eventually about eight pacifiers are lying somewhere near her face, out of sight and out of reach... this infuriates her and... well... you can guess the rest. The suck drive is a powerful thing! Wish I could come up with a better way to keep pacis always available than coming in to replace them all the time (which seems to only feed the greater problem). Any ideas?

Just be patient, EB. As parents, we tend to want everything difficult to be over FAST. But kids learn through trial and error. She's already learned to find a pacifier. Soon she'll learn that only one goes in at at a time. I promise!!
